Commemorate "The Time of the Giving of the Torah" Monday, June 9, 2008 beginning at 10:00 a.m.
Prayer services include Hallel (psalms of praise) and yizkor (memorial service)
This is one of the three pilgrimage festivals (Sukkot, Passover, Shavuot), the "NoBull" (meatless) festival (traditionally a dairy celebration). Come and hear the reading of the Ten Commandments. Hear Chapter 42 of Isaiah, the Haftarah, about how "God's people will teach the true way to the nations."
Admit it -- you've got a lot of shoes in your closet that you don't wear...give them to someone who needs them! The UJC is partnering with Soles 4 Souls to get much needed new and gently used footwear to those in need. Soles 4 Souls is a non-profit organization with a simple mission: to impact as many lives as possible with the gift of shoes. To date, they have helped donate millions of pairs of shoes to victims of natural disaster (Hurricane Katrina, tsunamis in Asia) as well as to those in poverty stricken areas or situations. It is estimated that Americans have 1.5 billion pairs of unworn shoes lying in closets -- each one of these shoes can make a tangible difference in someone's life.
Simply bring your donations (please bind each pair together with a rubber band) and deposit in the collection box located at the bottom of the steps near the classrooms. You'll be helping the needy, effortlessly...not to mention gaining closet space! Any questions, please email wweiss@birkenstockusa.com.
Support the United Jewish Center by saying "To Life" in a unique clog design, available nowhere else. All proceeds go to support UJC programs and services.
Please print the order form and return it with your order to the UJC.
Please contact Will Weiss 203 746 3620 (wweiss@birkenstockusa.com) with questions; email is best!
Shabbat Morning Learners' Service Part II
Saturday morning, June 14, 10:00 a.m.
The Torah Service, The Aleinu, and the Conclusion
You are invited to come back and come for the first time…interrupt and ask questions you always wanted to ask but "knew" it was inappropriate to do so. NOW YOU CAN!!! Why do we do this and not that? What is the meaning of this, the significance of that, the origin of this practice or the reason for that strange choreography?
THIS IS YOUR TIME. Come prepared. We had a great turnout and a great community experience with the Rabbi in March. Now we will continue with PART II-focusing on the Torah Service.
The Ritual Committee urges you to attend and participate. A wonderful, delicious Kiddush will follow-but the sweetest taste of all will be the taste of learning and community which we shared in March and which we will enjoy again on June 14.

One of the best preschool programs in the Danbury area can be found on Sunday mornings at the UJC Religious School. This pre-kindergarten class of 3 and 4 year olds enjoys an outstanding Let's Experience Judaism Program. This exciting program is available to both members and non members so please help us spread the word to all your Jewish friends and family in the greater Danbury area. Additional information is available from Daryl Bain, Director of Education at EdDir@UnitedJewishCenter.org or 203-743-1180.

The UJC and IGive.com have teamed up to make it easy for you to support the UJC -- and it doesn't cost you a penny!
IGive.com's stated mission is "to enable the economic power of individuals to benefit their chosen communities"; their goal is to have a portion of every online transaction benefit causes close to home. IGive has created a shopping portal that allows you to shop at your favorite online sites and stores as you always do; when you make a purchase through IGive's portal, the store donates a percentage of your transaction to the benefit of your choice. It's simple and easy -- you don't have to do anything special, and donations are made in your name.
The list of vendors on IGive's portal is 700 strong and growing; you'll find that all the most popular shopping sites (Amazon, Zappos, Barnes & Noble) are represented, plus a long list of more specialized sites. Most anywhere you shop now, you can shop through IGive.
The UJC is now a registered cause on IGive's portal; all you need to do is register as a user on IGive (it's free!) and identify the UJC as your chosen cause. Then, go about your normal online activities; IGive provides you a regular tally of the donations that have resulted in your transactions, so you can watch your support grow.
Go to www.igive.com to get started -- it's a fast, simple and zero-cost way to raise money for the UJC.
When you shop for toothpaste, shampoo and soap or have travel size toiletries to share remember those who are needy. Personal care items for The Interfaith AIDS ministry and old cell phones, used only for emergencies at the Women's Center, can be left in the basket by the stairs on the first floor.
Social Action projects are funded by your contributions to the United Jewish Center Tikvah Fund and Mazon.
Remember and honor family and friends with a donation to the Tikvah Fund and contribute 3% of the cost of the food at family and synagogue celebrations to help feed the needy at the Dorothy Day Hospitality House soup kitchen.
Remember those less fortunate!
Please don’t forget to drop off person care items for the Interfaith AIDS Ministry and old cell phones for the Women’s Center on the bin in the synagogue in the downstairs hallway.

Chapter 12
1 When they were in Hazeroth, 1Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman he had married: "He married a Cushite woman!" 2 They said, "Has the Lord spoken only through Moses? Has He not spoken through us as well?" The Lord heard it. 3 Now Moses was a very humble man, more so than any other man on earth. 4 Suddenly the Lord called to Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, "Come out, you three, to the Tent of Meeting." So the three of them went out. 5 The Lord came down in a pillar of cloud, stopped at the entrance of the Tent, and called out, "Aaron and Miriam!" The two of them came forward; 6 and He said, "Hear these My words: When a prophet of the Lord arises among you, I make Myself known to him in a vision, I speak with him in a dream. 7 Not so with My servant Moses; he is trusted throughout My household. 8 With him I speak mouth to mouth, plainly and not in riddles, and he beholds the likeness of the Lord. How then did you not shrink from speaking against My servant Moses!" 9 Still incensed with them, the Lord departed. 10 As the cloud withdrew from the Tent, there was Miriam stricken with snow-white scales! When Aaron turned toward Miriam, he saw that she was stricken with scales. 11 And Aaron said to Moses, "O my lord, account not to us the sin which we committed in our folly. 12 Let her not be as one dead, who emerges from his mother's womb with half his flesh eaten away." 13 So Moses cried out to the Lord, saying, "O God, pray heal her!"
