The United Jewish Center Honors Ralph Falkenstein
A Man of Vision

On September 30, 2007, the United Jewish Center will honor Dr. Ralph Falkenstein in a long-overdue gesture of deep respect and gratitude. Ralph, a past synagogue president, has been an anchor for our community in many ways.

With dedication and love, Ralph has served the United Jewish Center. And with high standards, diligent efforts, and caring patience, he serves the greater Danbury community as an exemplary physician.

Please join us at La Fortuna Restaurant to honor this very special man.

For more information, contact the United Jewish Center at (203) 748-3355.

On Wednesday, October 3rd – 6:00 p.m., join us as we celebrate and dance with the Torah.

Social Action

High Holy Day Food Drive

The shelves at the St. James Food Pantry are empty this time of year. Our neighbors depend on our Jewish Community’s food drive to replenish and restock their food needs. Feed the hungry – and let’s do so as a synagogue community.

You will find a grocery bag at your seat on Rosh Hashanah. Suggestions of what to bring will be found on the bags. You may also bring additional bags. Please bring the bag(s) between Rosh Hashanah and Sukkot. Place bags in the Marcus Dairy truck.

For security purposes, no filled bags will be allowed in the building.

Let’s Fill The Shelves!

Remember those less fortunate!

Personal Care Items Collection: There is a great need in the community for items such as deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo and soap. When you shop for yourself, buy a bit for someone else and bring it to the UJC. Leave donations in the bin near the steps.

Cell Phone Collection: Donate your old cell phone to be used by victims of domestic violence. Bring the phone and charger to the UJC and they will be brought to the Women’s Center to be used just in emergency situations by those who cannot afford their own phones.

Bikur Holim

Taste of Torah:

Parashat Ki Tavo (Deut. 26:1 – 29:8) is read on September 1, 2007.

Chapter 26

5 You shall then recite as follows before the Lord your God: "My father was a fugitive Aramean. He went down to Egypt with meager numbers and sojourned there; but there he became a great and very populous nation. 6 The Egyptians dealt harshly with us and oppressed us; they imposed heavy labor upon us. 7 We cried to the Lord, the God of our fathers, and the Lord heard our plea and saw our plight, our misery, and our oppression. 8 The Lord freed us from Egypt by a mighty hand, by an outstretched arm and awesome power, and by signs and portents. 9 He brought us to this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 Wherefore I now bring the first fruits of the soil which You, O Lord, have given me."

You shall leave it before the Lord your God and bow low before the Lord your God. 11 And you shall enjoy, together with the Levite and the stranger in your midst, all the bounty that the Lord your God has bestowed upon you and your household.
