Upcoming Events

Help Chad Move!

Just a half dozen men can make a difference, and start the New Year with a "feel good" effort. Chad Sinanian has the opportunity to move to a better apartment in his building here in Danbury. A group will be meeting there at 9:00 AM on Sunday, January 7. We just need to move his furniture and belongings from his second floor apartment, down one flight of steps, to his new first floor apartment. If you could do this Mitzvah please contact Art Prager at prager@us.ibm.com or the UJC office at office@unitedjewishcenter.org.

The overflow shelter is looking for volunteers

When the other homeless shelters fill up the overflow are sent to the First Congregational Church. It is truly a mitzvah you can do in your sleep! It may not be the most comfortable night’s sleep you’ve ever had but the gratitude of the clients more than makes up for that.

We have traditionally helped out during Christmas week and we are looking for volunteers again for that week in addition to other nights.

As in the past you will be expected to arrive at the church at 9 p.m. and stay until 6 a.m. On the nights we schedule we will have 2 volunteers, if you are a new volunteer we will make every effort to put you with someone who has done it before.

To volunteer or for more information, please contact Nancy Marcus at 203-748-4163 or Kathy Bardes (1st Cong. Church) at 203-798-1052.

We are also looking for donations of toothpaste and deodorant.

You're invited to a wedding!

The Sisterhood and Brotherhood are proud to announce the wedding of Sheila Matilda Schwartzbergerfieldmanstein to Poindexter Paul Plotka on Saturday, February 24, at 7:00 p.m. Your invitation will be in the December Shofar. If you want to sit closer to the bride's table (or further from it), you can print out your invitation and send it in sooner.

Auction!

The UJC Goods and Services Auction has been postponed until March 3, 2007. If you have goods or services to contribute, contact Bonnie and Alan Wunsch at auction@unitedjewishcenter.org or call (203) 730-8530.

Taste of Torah: Vayigash - Genesis 44:18 - 47:27

This translation was taken from the JPS Tanakh

Genesis 45:4-8

4 Then Joseph said to his brothers, "Come forward to me." And when they came forward, he said, "I am your brother Joseph, he whom you sold into Egypt. Now do not be distressed or reproach Yourselves because you sold me hither; it was to save life that God sent me ahead of you. 6 It is now two years that there has been famine in the land, and there are still five years to come in which there shall be no yield from tilling. 7 God has sent me ahead of you to ensure Your survival on earth, and to save your lives in an extraordinary deliverance. 8 So, it was not you who sent me here, but God; and He has made me a father to Pharaoh, lord of all his household, and ruler over the whole land of Egypt.
