When the other homeless shelters fill up the overflow are sent to the First Congregational Church. It is truly a mitzvah you can do in your sleep! It may not be the most comfortable night’s sleep you’ve ever had but the gratitude of the clients more than makes up for that.
We have traditionally helped out during Christmas week and we are looking for volunteers again for that week in addition to other nights.
As in the past you will be expected to arrive at the church at 9 p.m. and stay until 6 a.m. On the nights we schedule we will have 2 volunteers, if you are a new volunteer we will make every effort to put you with someone who has done it before.
To volunteer or for more information, please contact Nancy Marcus at 203-748-4163 or Kathy Bardes (1st Cong. Church) at 203-798-1052.

“Whenever I am at a 13 year old’s bar or bat mitzvah I feel a little wistful that I never had one. I feel that I have missed out on one of the most gratifying moments of Jewish life. Oh well, what’s past is past—gone forever.”
NOT SO!!!!!
If the above sentiment sounds like you or someone you know, let us give you the good news. Whatever your age or stage in life you now can have that bar or bat mitzvah. You can make up for lost time, enjoy the process and reap the spiritual fulfillment . . . . and maybe a fountain pen as well!
The United Jewish Center knows that many of our Jewish friends and neighbors, non-members too and members of our congregation want to take part in adult classes for bar and bat mitzvah. Rabbi Librach and Cantor Kessler will be convening a group as soon as we hear from you, so together we can determine time, day, etc.
It will not be too difficult to master (if a 13 year old can do it, so can you!) And it will lead to the rite of passage you thought you had missed out on.
START ON SOMETHING YOU HAVE WANTED TO DO FOR AGES…
JUST DO IT!!!!
Call the United Jewish Center at 203-748-3355 or e-mail to Office@Unitedjewishcenter.org and we will get back to you.
Note: Snowbirds will not be excluded — arrangements will be made.

10 Jacob left Beer-sheba, and set out for Haran. 11 He came upon a certain place and stopped there for the night, for the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of that place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place. 12 He had a dream; a stairway was set on the ground and its top reached to the sky, and angels of God were going up and down on it. 13 And the Lord was standing beside him and He said, "I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac: the ground on which you are lying I will assign to you and to your offspring. 14 Your descendants shall be as the dust of the earth; you shall spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All the families of the earth shall bless themselves by you and your descendants. 15 Remember, I am with you: I will protect you wherever you go and will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you." 16 Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, "Surely the Lord is present in this place, and I did not know it!" 17 Shaken, he said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the abode of God, and that is the gateway to heaven." 18 Early in the morning, Jacob took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on the top of it. 19 He named that site Bethel; but previously the name of the city had been Luz.
20 Jacob then made a vow, saying, "If God remains with me, if He protects me on this journey that I am making, and gives me bread to eat and clothing to wear, 21 and if I return safe to my father's house — the Lord shall be my God. 22 And this stone, which I have set up as a pillar, shall be God's abode; and of all that You give me, I will set aside a tithe for You."
