DANBURY — A memorial walk will be held today for a man who was a leader in the Danbury community for more than 60 years.

Rabbi Jerome R. Malino, who died last year at the age of 90, will be honored at 6 p.m. in a memorial walk that will begin at City Hall and continue up Deer Hill Avenue to the United Jewish Center.

The designs for two monuments to Malino will be unveiled during the walk.

Malino was not only a leader at the synagogue, but served on the Board of Education for 20 years and on the board of directors of the Danbury Music Centre since its inception in 1935. He was also one of the founders of the Association of Religious Communities.

Mayor Mark Boughton, who was part of the committee that organized the memorial, said Malino was a man people looked up to.

"He was so involved in so many facets of the community,” he said. "You could always learn something from him. That’s what was so special about him.”

Nancy Sudik, the executive director of the Danbury Music Centre, said Malino leaves behind an amazing legacy.

"Rabbi Malino is one of those institutions that you think you can never live without, but who, through being an excellent role model and example, made it possible to go on without him,” she said. "He taught us what we have to do.”

Myrna Jacobs-Rubin, the honorary president of the United Jewish Center, said it is important that people know what an important figure Malino was in the Danbury community.

"He was a man of all seasons and a real man of the community,” she said. "It is very appropriate for the city of Danbury to honor him.”

The memorial walk will open with remarks from Boughton, followed by an unveiling of the prototype for a monument that will be at the corner of West Street and Deer Hill Avenue.

After the walk, which is open to the public, there will be another prototype unveiled for a monument that will sit in front of the United Jewish Center.

Jacobs-Rubin said Malino made an impact on so many different people, that she expects a large turnout for the event.

"It’s nice for all of us to be able honor such a legend,” she said.
